“Quick Fixes for Fantastic Fiction and Moving Memoir”
Presented by Elizabeth Lyon
Many writers are surprised to learn that quick-fix techniques can produce amazing and instant improvements in style, structure, and characterization. While some revising requires elbow grease and agonizing hours, this short workshop focuses on maximum results for minimum effort.
Elizabeth Lyon, a freelance book editor, instructor and author, began her career in 1988, teaching dozens of writing and publishing classes and workshops through LCC’s Continuing Education. She led 3 critique groups of writers on a weekly basis in her Eugene home for 13 years. Mentored in editing skills by literary agent Natasha Kern from 1988 to 1993, Elizabeth then broadened her agent relationships, on behalf of her editing clients, to dozens more. By consulting with writers, editing their whole or partial books, queries, synopses, and proposals, she has participated in the publishing success of about 40 nonfiction books, a dozen novels and as many awards and contest winners.
Elizabeth is the author of Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write, The Sell Your Novel Tool Kit, A Writer’s Guide to Nonfiction, A Writer’s Guide to Fiction, and Manuscript Makeover: Revision Techniques No Fiction Writer Can Afford to Ignore. This book was featured in “The Writer” magazine as one of the “8 Great Writing Books of 2008,” and described as “perhaps the most comprehensive book on revising fiction.”
She lives in Springfield with rott-span-corgi-heel-x Gracie Allen and with brat cat Hunter.

Back when I home-schooled my children, I had to think up ways to facilitate the natural curiosity that children have – the kind that often gets swallowed up by video games and Nickelodeon. At least it did in my house. … Continue reading

So, I’ve been cleaning. And this is my beautiful, slightly more organized garage. Despite this, the mice are back. Eeew. Paul and I saw one last night while we were watching a movie, so we set some more traps. Bummer. … Continue reading

Hooray! Now I can finally share some things that are going on around here. Aww. Sleeping dogs are the best dogs. Especially that rascally puppy. He’s so much nicer when he sleeps. This was a fabulous 3d tic tac toe … Continue reading

So the next few days are planned to the hilt. I’m going to the library this afternoon to make returns and pick up some new books I can use with Aubrey’s main lessons. Tomorrow we are going to Home Depot … Continue reading
Who I Am
Part of me wants to upload pictures of my house (each room) so you can see what the inside of my brain looks like right now. But then I get too embarrassed. But then I think: There are so totally … Continue reading
Out of Africa — in Winston, Oregon
(Paul in the tour bus) On Memorial Day our family joined a bunch of other homeschoolers and toured the Wildlife Safari. This was a 500 pound Siberian Tiger. The stick in the picture is not poking him. We had an … Continue reading
Accountability
I think I may have to take the Nablopomo challenge again, just so I am brought to the computer to post more often. I wrote every day (mostly) in March. And I think I’ve posted four times this month and … Continue reading
Up to speed
So Sorry. I have fallen by the wayside due to: birthday parties, sick children, missing the first performance of our new theater group (due to said illness), Easter bbq, playdates, field trip, and SpiralScouts meetings … plus a huge ‘restaurant’ … Continue reading
Un-schooling and Not.
I dislike posting without a game plan. (Or even having written it ahead of time and just typing it here after I’ve edited and spell checked.) But here I am, stealing moments before my son gets up to write. Otherwise, … Continue reading
Need Suggestions
Does anyone have any ideas for educational, fun activities to do with kids ages 7-10 during the year? I’ve checked out Nearby Nature, Bounce, Homesource and The Science Factory. Anything else? I think I’m serious about this! My only … Continue reading
