“Quick Fixes for Fantastic Fiction and Moving Memoir”
Presented by Elizabeth Lyon
Many writers are surprised to learn that quick-fix techniques can produce amazing and instant improvements in style, structure, and characterization. While some revising requires elbow grease and agonizing hours, this short workshop focuses on maximum results for minimum effort.
Elizabeth Lyon, a freelance book editor, instructor and author, began her career in 1988, teaching dozens of writing and publishing classes and workshops through LCC’s Continuing Education. She led 3 critique groups of writers on a weekly basis in her Eugene home for 13 years. Mentored in editing skills by literary agent Natasha Kern from 1988 to 1993, Elizabeth then broadened her agent relationships, on behalf of her editing clients, to dozens more. By consulting with writers, editing their whole or partial books, queries, synopses, and proposals, she has participated in the publishing success of about 40 nonfiction books, a dozen novels and as many awards and contest winners.
Elizabeth is the author of Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write, The Sell Your Novel Tool Kit, A Writer’s Guide to Nonfiction, A Writer’s Guide to Fiction, and Manuscript Makeover: Revision Techniques No Fiction Writer Can Afford to Ignore. This book was featured in “The Writer” magazine as one of the “8 Great Writing Books of 2008,” and described as “perhaps the most comprehensive book on revising fiction.”
She lives in Springfield with rott-span-corgi-heel-x Gracie Allen and with brat cat Hunter.

Happy Spring Equinox … and Happy Nowruz!
Today for the Spring Equinox (New Year’s Day to some on the Indian subcontinent — but mostly Iran) I made some goals in these specific categories: Health, Family, Creativity, Children, Relationships, Travel, Knowledge, Business, and Wealth. If I’d thought about … Continue reading
What Motivates You?
Someone asked me recently why I wrote. Or rather, what *motivated* me to write. This was my answer:
What’s an In-Debt, Paycheck to Paycheck Mama To Do?
I’ve already exceeded my grocery budget and it’s only the fifth of the month. Seriously, I don’t think my grocery budget should count if it’s a Costco month.
My House is Me
Let me talk about my house. The kitchen feels like my mom. I want to sit at this table – that my grandfather made – and drink the coffee that my mom got up so early in the morning … Continue reading
Invisible Special Needs
So I just spent THREE hours reading blogs written by mom’s with kids with Asperger’s or Autism, and websites that touted the iPad as a great resource for these kids. Apparently there is a butt-load of apps specifically designed for … Continue reading
Time Suck
I have a friend who has been unplugged for a month now. A noble gesture for sure, but one I’m unwilling to emulate. I don’t have cable, so I don’t watch TV, but I am a movie junkie and definitely … Continue reading
Confessional
I haven’t been blogging for ages. There are so many thoughts and worries and …. chores. Everything is new and different and still changing. Mostly I haven’t been writing here, because I’ve got the damn thing syndicated to my Facebook … Continue reading
Enough about me, Let’s talk about Me
Shall this post be all about me? My birthday *is* coming up in two days …. Well, alright. I’ll make it about all of us. Because, really anything I do spills over on to the other people in my lives. … Continue reading
Chinese Homestay Concluded + Regular Stuff
The Homestay Rep took all the kids to Putter’s where they had pizza, soda, miniature golf, arcarde games and lazer tag. A totally American experience. Whew. I’m back. It’s been a weird almost two weeks. It’s really just crazy. But, … Continue reading
Beans and Business
I was emailing a friend of mine today and filling him in on our latest …. and it occurred to me that I could TOTALLY cut and paste. No Shame. Here’s what’s going on: Regarding Paul. He just told me … Continue reading
