“Quick Fixes for Fantastic Fiction and Moving Memoir”
Presented by Elizabeth Lyon
Many writers are surprised to learn that quick-fix techniques can produce amazing and instant improvements in style, structure, and characterization. While some revising requires elbow grease and agonizing hours, this short workshop focuses on maximum results for minimum effort.
Elizabeth Lyon, a freelance book editor, instructor and author, began her career in 1988, teaching dozens of writing and publishing classes and workshops through LCC’s Continuing Education. She led 3 critique groups of writers on a weekly basis in her Eugene home for 13 years. Mentored in editing skills by literary agent Natasha Kern from 1988 to 1993, Elizabeth then broadened her agent relationships, on behalf of her editing clients, to dozens more. By consulting with writers, editing their whole or partial books, queries, synopses, and proposals, she has participated in the publishing success of about 40 nonfiction books, a dozen novels and as many awards and contest winners.
Elizabeth is the author of Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write, The Sell Your Novel Tool Kit, A Writer’s Guide to Nonfiction, A Writer’s Guide to Fiction, and Manuscript Makeover: Revision Techniques No Fiction Writer Can Afford to Ignore. This book was featured in “The Writer” magazine as one of the “8 Great Writing Books of 2008,” and described as “perhaps the most comprehensive book on revising fiction.”
She lives in Springfield with rott-span-corgi-heel-x Gracie Allen and with brat cat Hunter.

Does Every Mother Have ADD?
Robert didn’t get into the private school I wanted him to go to because he doesn’t follow directions. Robert cannot receive occupational therapy right now — though he needs it — because he doesn’t follow directions. Robert sometimes cannot receive … Continue reading
More Braces
When Robert first went in to get his braces put on, his lateral incisors weren’t in yet. That’s the tooth in between the front tooth and the canine tooth. There was a big enough gap between his front two teeth … Continue reading
Stuck in Hypocrisy
This is going to be raw and broken and weird and not very coherent. I’m going to use this space to free-write and journal today. I’m feeling melancholy and slow and pensive. I’m feeling trapped and stuck and I can’t … Continue reading
My Latest Adventure
I got up this morning after lying in bed with Paul, snuggling and talking in the dark. (I love doing this and it never seems to happen.) I impetuously and good-heartedly made homemade, gluten-free biscuits and humanely treated sausage gravy … Continue reading
That’s Just the Way It Is
The last hour is an hour full of tweenager angst. Aubrey has been in a delightful, snuggly, happy, outgoing mood all morning. When requested to get dressed for her art class she put on her old, almost outgrown, grossly stained … Continue reading
Here I Go Again … (It’s not just a Whitesnake song)
It’s November 1st. Nanowrimo has begun. I stayed up until midnight watching old Firefly episodes with my husband and girlfriend so that I could stay awake to start writing as soon as I could on my nano book. It’s funny, … Continue reading
Inner Work
So I was catching up on my blog reading and stumbled across this. So, taking the challenge I did a short stint of inner work and answered some of her questions. Here are the results: I feel called to be … Continue reading
Wallowing
I’m having a blah day … and it’s only 10:15 in the morning. Sigh. I’ve already re-started a sour load of laundry that I didn’t take out of the washer yesterday, closed up the chicken coop that I left open … Continue reading
guilt trip
Sorry I haven’t been writing in here more often. But I have excuses, really I do. The first one was a car accident. Rear-ended, car totaled. Compressed disc(k?) at L5 and still having headaches. I suspect I had a very … Continue reading
Radical Unschooling Be Damned
I’m having a Jonah Day. Actually more like a Jonah Ten Minutes. It kinda started on Thursday. Paul has Thursdays off and I try (at his request) to keep those days empty so that we can spontaneously do things together … Continue reading
