“Quick Fixes for Fantastic Fiction and Moving Memoir”
Presented by Elizabeth Lyon
Many writers are surprised to learn that quick-fix techniques can produce amazing and instant improvements in style, structure, and characterization. While some revising requires elbow grease and agonizing hours, this short workshop focuses on maximum results for minimum effort.
Elizabeth Lyon, a freelance book editor, instructor and author, began her career in 1988, teaching dozens of writing and publishing classes and workshops through LCC’s Continuing Education. She led 3 critique groups of writers on a weekly basis in her Eugene home for 13 years. Mentored in editing skills by literary agent Natasha Kern from 1988 to 1993, Elizabeth then broadened her agent relationships, on behalf of her editing clients, to dozens more. By consulting with writers, editing their whole or partial books, queries, synopses, and proposals, she has participated in the publishing success of about 40 nonfiction books, a dozen novels and as many awards and contest winners.
Elizabeth is the author of Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write, The Sell Your Novel Tool Kit, A Writer’s Guide to Nonfiction, A Writer’s Guide to Fiction, and Manuscript Makeover: Revision Techniques No Fiction Writer Can Afford to Ignore. This book was featured in “The Writer” magazine as one of the “8 Great Writing Books of 2008,” and described as “perhaps the most comprehensive book on revising fiction.”
She lives in Springfield with rott-span-corgi-heel-x Gracie Allen and with brat cat Hunter.

The Secret Lesson of Books and Grief
Strange. Emotional spilling over. While reading a book, I move from one scene to the next — one sentence to the next — and start to cry. With no hint of a reason why.
Time Suck
I have a friend who has been unplugged for a month now. A noble gesture for sure, but one I’m unwilling to emulate. I don’t have cable, so I don’t watch TV, but I am a movie junkie and definitely … Continue reading
Soooo Many Books To Read
A surprising, or not so surprising, by-product of attending writers conferences, is the books you end up buying that you weren’t planning on. I came home with four more (not counting the review copy of Tasting Rain that was waiting … Continue reading
"Nook"y on the Plane
I have a Nook. I got it in the divorce. I’ve only used it once though, and I didn’t buy it for myself. (I didn’t inhale disclaimer.) My ex bought it for himself, and then bought the iPad he really wanted … Continue reading
"And Only to Deceive"
Hooray! I have re-discovered it! Apparently this is a first book in a series of mysteries during this time period. I can’t wait to read the rest of them. Tasha Alexander, here I come.
I don’t know the title or the author … Damn!
Things I remember about the book: *kind-of a gothic, Jane Austen type *main character was a young widow who didn’t know her husband (he’d died shortly after marrying her and it wasn’t a marriage of love on her part) *she … Continue reading
"A Fine Mess: Living and Parenting Simpler, Greener, Cheaper, and Wiser"
I was invited to write a review for an upcoming book by fellow blogger, Michelle Kennedy Hogan a while ago. Her title peaked my curiosity, “A Fine Mess: Living and Parenting Simpler, Greener, Cheaper and Wiser,” because this is my … Continue reading
Personality Types: Estp’s, Infp’s, and Enfj’s … O MY!
I just finished reading a book about different personality types (based on the Meyers-Briggs tests) and how to nurture our kids while taking those personality types into account. For instance, Aubrey is (based on my feeble attempts at ‘labeling’ her) … Continue reading
Random
We had book club tonight. Well, I did. Paul dropped out. He wasn’t having any fun. He enjoyed the conversations, but he wouldn’t read any of the books. Aubrey went skating with a friend and ended up going to their … Continue reading
It’s turning around — A Good Day Today
Had a great day today. Cleaned and ran errands this morning. Bought some flowers for the front porch that I’m hoping to plant tomorrow, and hosted a crafting circle. We painted, talked and knitted, and sculpted, too. It was fun … Continue reading
